Volta Regional Minister Supports Ho Prisons Rehabilitation Project
The Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, on Tuesday, August 19, paid a working visit to the Ho Prisons in response to an appeal from the authorities for support towards their rehabilitation and livelihood empowerment projects.
The Officer-in-Charge of the Ho Female Prisons, Assistant Director of Prisons (ADP) Mrs. Mandy Mensah, had on Monday 18th August 2025, led a delegation to the Minister’s office to present their request for assistance to establish a catfish pond and poultry project under the “DG’s Kitchen Support Project.” The initiative, sanctioned by the Director General of Prisons, is aimed at boosting food production and vocational training for inmates.
During his visit, Hon. Gunu not only responded positively to the request but also donated a little more than the amount initially sought to ensure the successful takeoff of the project. He further commended the prison authorities for their efforts at introducing rehabilitation projects such as doormat weaving, bread baking, liquid soap making, and bleach, which equip inmates with employable skills for reintegration into society.
The Minister, accompanied by the Deputy Director of Prisons for Volta and Oti Regions, Mr. Wilson Salah, and other officials, toured both the male and female prison facilities. The Ho Female Prisons currently houses 15 inmates, including two babies, while the male section has 367 inmates.
Hon. Gunu reaffirmed government’s commitment to supporting initiatives that promote rehabilitation, skill acquisition, and the welfare of inmates, noting that such projects play a crucial role in reducing reoffending and enhancing social reintegration.
