National Commission on Small Arms Pays Courtesy Call on Volta Regional Minister
The Executive Secretary of the National Commission on Small Arms and Light Weapons, Dr. Adam A. Bonaa, has led a delegation to pay a courtesy call on the Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, at the Regional Minister’s Residency in Ho. The delegation was received by the Minister together with the Chief Director, Alhaji. Mohammed Avona Akape.
Dr. Bonaa explained that the visit was to engage the Region on the ongoing Gun Amnesty Programme. He outlined three key reasons for the engagement, including creating awareness on the amnesty, encouraging individuals with unregistered, illicit or excess firearms to voluntarily surrender them without fear of arrest, and sensitising stakeholders on the purpose and benefits of the amnesty. He added that the sensitisation seminar would take place on Wednesday, 7th January, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. at the Residency Conference Hall, to be followed by a public walk on Thursday, 8th January, 2026, starting at 7:00 a.m. from the Trafalgar Teaching Hospital in Ho.
In his response, Hon. James Gunu noted that the Minister for Interior had briefed Regional Ministers on the gun amnesty initiative and emphasised the need to extend it to the general public. He stressed that unregulated gun ownership poses serious security risks and reiterated that ensuring peace and security is a key component of his development agenda for the Volta Region, without which meaningful development cannot be achieved.
He welcomed the delegation and appealed for the amnesty period to be extended to the end of January to allow more citizens to take advantage of the initiative.
