Volta Regional Minister Engages House of Chiefs, Pledges Development and Unity
The Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, has reiterated government’s commitment to peace, development, and inclusive governance in the Region during the General Meeting of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs held on Friday, 18th July 2025 in Ho.
Hon. Gunu was accompanied by His Eminence Gabriel Kwamiga Atokple Tanko, Member of the Council of State, as well as the Volta Regional Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Hon. Mawutor Agbavitor, and other regional executives of the party. The Minister used the occasion to formally introduce the new regional leadership and express gratitude to the chiefs for their support during the 2024 general elections and his subsequent appointment.
In his address, Hon. Gunu unveiled a three-point regional development agenda anchored on peace and security, capacity-building for municipal and district assemblies, and collaboration with ministries and agencies to actualize President Mahama’s vision for the Volta Region.
Touching on key development projects, the Minister cited the ongoing Eastern Corridor Road works, the modernization of the Aflao Market Complex, the Blekusu coastal defense project, and new agro-industrial initiatives including the Kenaf-Malaysia partnership. He also highlighted the 24-hour economy strategy, set to be piloted during this year’s Volta Trade and Investment Fair, and announced the acquisition of land in Adaklu for the establishment of an industrial park.
While commending the chiefs for their continued cooperation, Hon. Gunu raised concerns about the prevalence of chieftaincy disputes in the region, describing them as major obstacles to development. He called on the Judicial Committee of the House to fast-track the resolution of cases and pledged government support for alternative dispute resolution mechanisms and traditional dialogue processes.
“Our shared mission is to build a Volta Region where tradition powers transformation,” Hon. Gunu emphasized, calling for unity between traditional leadership and state institutions.
The meeting was chaired by the President of the Volta Regional House of Chiefs, Togbe Tepre Hodo IV, and attended by paramount chiefs, MMDCEs, NDC executives, the 2025 Volta Fair Planning Committee, and members of the media.
