The Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, was ably represented by the Chief Director of the Volta Regional Coordinating Council, Mr. Mohammed Avona Akape, at the colourful ceremony held on Tuesday, 25th November 2025, to mark the Republic of Suriname’s 50th Independence Anniversary at the Residency Ceremonial Grounds in Ho. The celebration was held under the theme “Celebrating Suriname’s Golden Jubilee Through Culture, Trade and Tourism.”

In her address, Ms. Roberta Okai-Fumador, Regional Director of the Ghana Tourism Authority, highlighted the rich cultural heritage shared between Suriname and Ghana and commended Suriname’s resilience and progress over the past five decades. She emphasised the importance of deepening cooperation to advance mutual development.

The Suriname Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Fidelia Graand-Galon, also spoke passionately about the strong historical and cultural ties between Suriname and Ghana particularly the Volta Region. She noted the similarities in language, customs, and heritage and expressed her commitment to strengthening collaboration in tourism, culture, and people-to-people exchanges.

The ceremony further featured solidarity messages from H.E. Juliette Bynoe-Sutherland, Barbados’ Ambassador to Ghana, and Mr. Mohammed Avona Akape, who delivered warm felicitations on behalf of the Regional Minister and reaffirmed the VRCC’s readiness to support deeper regional and international cooperation.

Also present were Regional Security Commanders, Heads of Decentralised Departments and Agencies, and representatives from various ministries who joined in celebrating this significant milestone.

The Volta Regional Minister congratulates the Republic of Suriname on attaining its Golden Jubilee and looks forward to enhanced partnerships that promote culture, trade, tourism, and shared development.
