President Mahama Visits Volta Region On A Thank You Tour
On 24th January 2024, President John Dramani Mahama made his first stop in Ho, Volta Region as part of his Nationwide Thank You Tour following his 2024 presidential election victory. He received a rousing welcome at a durbar held at the Jubilee Park, Ho.
President John Dramani Mahama in his speech, promised significant development (prospects) for the Volta Region, aiming to address longstanding challenges and foster growth in critical areas such as infrastructure, agriculture, and community development. During his Thank You Tour in Ho, he thanked the people of the region for their unwavering support of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and outlined his commitment to delivering tangible development.
Speaking to the gathering of chiefs and residents, President Mahama acknowledged the region’s vital role in Ghana’s history and progress. He assured them that his administration would prioritize key projects, including the Ho-Denu Road and the Eastern Corridor Road, which have faced years of delays. “We are committed to not just repairing these roads but ensuring they meet modern standards to improve connectivity and economic activity across the region”, he said. Plans to enhance the Ho Airport and develop eco-tourism opportunities were also highlighted as part of his vision for the region’s economic revitalization.
In the agricultural sector, the President emphasized support for local farmers by proposing initiatives to boost rice production, establish cassava and ginger processing plants, and expand the Volta Palm Initiative. These efforts will create jobs and strengthen our ‘Made in Ghana’ brand, he stated, reaffirming his government’s dedication to reducing import reliance and promoting local industries.
President Mahama also addressed environmental challenges, including the impact of sea erosion and flooding in coastal areas. He pledged to accelerate the Sea Defense Project and provide necessary support to families affected by the Akosombo Dam spillage. These issues are about safeguarding livelihoods and protecting communities from recurring disasters, he noted.
Education and healthcare improvements were central to his message, with plans to upgrade the University of Health and Allied Sciences, resume work on abandoned E-block schools, and equip the Ho Teaching Hospital to meet modern healthcare standards. He emphasized the importance of these initiatives in enhancing quality of life and expanding opportunities for residents.
The President also recognized the contributions of traditional rulers, praising their role in maintaining peace and driving local development. He expressed a desire to work more closely with them on environmental protection and community-centered initiatives. “Our chiefs are invaluable partners in shaping a better future for Ghana,” he added.
President Mahama’s address left many hopeful for a renewed focus on the Volta Region, with actionable plans that promise to bridge developmental gaps and position the region as a model for progress.
The event was also marked by a thought-provoking speech from the Agbogbomefia of the Asogli Traditional Area, Togbe Afede XIV, who tackled critical national issues with a mix of candor and optimism.
Togbe Afede called for urgent constitutional reforms, describing Ghana’s current constitution as outdated and a contributor to impunity in governance.
The respected traditional leader also expressed frustration over economic inequality, condemning a system that disproportionately favors a privileged few. It is bad enough to suffer, but it is worse to know that you’re suffering because a few people think they deserve all that the state has to offer, he lamented.
In a direct endorsement of President Mahama’s leadership, Togbe Afede commended the appointment of a capable Volta Regional Minister and lauded Mahama’s efforts to restore Ghana’s global reputation.
The address captured the spirit of the day both a celebration of progress and a call to action for national renewal under President Mahama’s administration.
