Paramount Chief of Keta and Delegation Call on Volta Regional Minister
The Paramount Chief of Keta, Togbi James Ocloo V, and a delegation of chiefs on 26th February 2025 paid a courtesy visit to the Volta Regional Minister, Hon. James Gunu, to congratulate him and discuss pressing concerns affecting the Keta Area.
The delegation raised critical issues, including the severe impact of coastal erosion on Havedzi and surrounding areas, emphasizing the need for urgent dredging to protect affected communities. They also expressed concerns about poor road infrastructure, highlighting that the Keta Market has remained undeveloped since independence, while roads such as Keta to Afiadenyigba remain in dire condition.
The chiefs further recounted a demolition incident on December 29 last year, where a bulldozer destroyed over 20 houses in Keta under unclear circumstances. After mobilizing the youth and involving the police, the situation was contained, but they demanded answers regarding the indiscriminate sale of reclaimed lands, which has led to multiple ownership disputes.
Additionally, they urged the government to develop the Keta Harbour to drive economic growth.
Hon. Gunu assured the chiefs that Keta remains a priority, given its historical significance as the birthplace of former President Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings. He pledged that all concerns raised would be addressed, with steps taken to rebrand Keta and ensure proper development planning for the area.
He further called for a stakeholder committee to investigate and address the issue of multiple land ownership.
The meeting ended with a commitment to deeper collaboration between the government and traditional authorities to safeguard the interests of the people of Keta.
