Government, Chiefs Commit to Reducing Chieftaincy Disputes in Volta Region
A two-day Capacity Building Workshop for the Judicial Committee of the Volta Region House of Chiefs opened in Ho on 11th September 2025 to tackle rising chieftaincy disputes. Organized by the VRCC and the Volta Region House of Chiefs, the workshop aims to equip committee members with skills for fair and efficient dispute resolution.
Volta Regional Minister Hon. James Gunu highlighted that the region has over 69 active disputes, stressing that they hinder development. He outlined government efforts such as digitizing succession records, strengthening Houses of Chiefs, and integrating chiefs in peacebuilding.
Minister for Local Government, Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon. Ahmed Ibrahim, officially opened the event, emphasizing judicial committees’ role in ensuring fairness. He also announced reforms including a review of the Chieftaincy Act and stronger collaboration between chiefs and local assemblies.
Also in attendance was the National Security Adviser to the President, Hon. Prosper Douglas Bani, who joined other dignitaries in reaffirming government’s support for peace and stability in the Volta Region.
The workshop, presided over by Togbe Tepre Hodo IV, is expected to conclude with a renewed commitment to peace and development
