The Regional Department of Social Welfare has organised a two-day capacity building for caregivers in two Residential Homes for Children in the Volta Region. The two institutions which benefitted from the training were In My Father’s House Children’s Village at Abor in the Keta Municipality (from 2nd to 4th August, 2022) and Madamfo Ghana Children’s Shelter in Ho Municipality ( from 1st – 2nd September, 2022). The training was in fulfilment of the Department’s mandate to ensure adequate care and protection for orphan and vulnerable children.

The objective of the training was to provide Caregivers and Managers of the above-named Children’s Homes with the requisite knowledge and skills in order that they could provide good care for orphaned and vulnerable children in their custody. The training was crucial against the backdrop that persons providing care for children in those homes had no or little training in delivering care and protection for children. Topics treated included Positive Parenting, Child Abuse and all its Elements, Special Needs of Children in Residential Homes for children with emphasis on Attachment, Child Development, Laws on Children, and Trauma Informed Care.

Managers of the two facilities were also taken through the requirements in the National Standards for Residential Homes for Children and their roles in the case management process.

The team from the Department, led by the Regional Director, Mrs. Stella Agbezuhlor Mawutor provided the training and held some interactions with the children to understand their needs as well as to take them through their Rights and Responsibilities.

A total of Sixty-five (65) Caregivers and Managers were trained in both facilities whiles about One Hundred and Twenty (120) Children were engaged at In My Father’s House Children’s Village in Abor during the programme.
