The 2022 celebration of the International Day of the Girl Child was observed nationwide on Tuesday, 11th October 2022 to promote a safe environment for the girl child. The Celebration was under the theme “Ending Adolescent Pregnancy, Abuse and Exploitation: A Shared Responsibility” In the Volta Region, the Day was celebrated at Adidome in the Central Tongu District through the mobiliz

ation and support of International Needs Ghana, a Non-Profit Organisation which operates from Adidome.

The celebration of the Day at Adidome had the participation of the Regional Department of Social Welfare and other people drawn from the International Needs Ghana’s programme areas in both the Volta and Oti Regions. The other participants included adolescents, opinion leaders and Government Official’s from some selected Districts.

As part of the celebration there were panel discussion and open forum on challenges which hinder the opportunities and advancement of the girl child and how to address these challenges. The Regional Director of the Department of Social Welfare who was the chairperson for the occasion and also a member for the panel discussion conveyed a written petition by the girls to the Regional Coordinating Director for consideration and support in eliminating violence against the girl child in the Volta Region.
