The Afadzato South District Assembly celebrated eight communities achieving Open Defecation Free (ODF) status on Tuesday at Nyagbo Agodome, under the theme “We Will Always Need a Toilet.”

Volta Regional Minister Hon. James Gunu commended the communities, emphasizing that sanitation is a lifelong responsibility and crucial for health and dignity.

Regional Environmental Health Officer Madam Stella Kumedzro highlighted that only 25% of Ghanaians have basic sanitation, while 18% still practice open defecation, urging broader community action.

The district was applauded for its Community-Led Total Sanitation approach, with traditional leaders, assembly members, and residents recognized for driving change.

Minister Gunu reiterated the government’s commitment to H.E. John Mahama’s Resetting Agenda, focusing on health, environment, and sustainable livelihoods.

The REHO called for united efforts to achieve full regional ODF status within five years, moving away from dependence on public latrines.

Awards and certificates were presented to communities, honoring their dedication to ending open defecation.

The event also promoted the National Sanitation Day initiative, encouraging monthly clean-ups and proper waste management.

Officials urged all landlords in the district to construct household toilets to safeguard the health and future of their communities.
