Department Of Children Holds End Of Year Child Protection Sector Review Meeting
On Tuesday, 17th January 2023, the Department of Children under the auspices of the Volta Regional Coordinating Council with support from UNICEF organised an End of Year Child Protection Sector Review meeting for stakeholder institutions within the Region at the Residency Conference Hall, Ho. The purpose of the meeting was to discuss the progress of child protection activities, challenges and the way forward, within the Region, by all stakeholders’ institutions in the year 2022.
At the meeting, a presentation on Ghana’s 6th and 7th Consolidated Report on the Implementation of United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) in Ghana was made on behalf of the Director of the Department of Children (Head Office) by Mrs. Florence Ayisi Quartey. The presentation touched on areas such as Civil Rights and Freedom, Violence against Children, Family Environment and Alternative Care, Basic Health and Welfare, Education, and Leisure as well as Cultural Activities.
The Department Social Welfare presented updates on Integrated Social Services (ISS), while the Birth and Death Registry presented the status of Birth Registration in the Region. Other stakeholder institutions were offered the opportunity to do a presentation on child protection activities carried out in the year under review, by their respective outfits.
Stakeholder institutions represented were Department of Children (both regional office and head office), Department of Social Welfare, Department of Gender, Traditional Authorities, Births and Deaths Registry, Legal Aids Commission, Ghana Health Service, Ghana Education Service, and the Ho Circuit Court. The rest were Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU) of the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Peace Council, Religious Leaders, NGOs Coalition on the Rights and Welfare of the Child, NGOs Coalition in Health, Compassion International Ghana, and Plan International Ghana, among others.
